Background

"Theogony of Hesiod" is an English translation of Hesiod's Theogony creation myth by Hugh G. Evelyn-White, first published in 1914. The myth is included in Evelyn-White's book, titled Hesiod, the Homeric Hymns, and Homerica, on pages 78-155. The book includes the ancient Greek and English versions of the myth in parallel view, split by page, along with some brief commentary. The translation is 1,120 lines long (total) and does not include section titles or summaries.

For being written in 1914, Evelyn-White's version of Theogony is extremely readable and easy to understand. It is available on Tufts University's Perseus Digital Library project.

The world was created by the first deities out of a void where nothing existed. The oldest deities were Chasm (chaos), Gaia (Earth), Tartarus, and Eros (desire). These deities gave birth to the other Greek figures in a genealogical succession. Much of the rest of creation came from bodily fluids, like semen or blood.
