Background

According to the colophon found on the clay cuneiform tablets related to the Epic of Atrahasis, Ipiq-Aya was the scribe who wrote down the contents using cuneiform script. This feature, according to scholars, was quite rare in that time period: 1702-1682 BCE. As stephanie Dalley wrote:

"Rarely is an author named for such an early text. Ipiq-Aya was writing during the reign of Ammi- aduqa, king of Babylon (1702-1682 BC), on eight-column tablets, each column comprising about fifty-five lines, and he probably lived in Sippar, where the tablets almost certainly originated. Ipiq-Aya was presumably the compiler and arranger of traditional material, and the extent of his personal contribution to it cannot be assessed." [1]

At any rate, it is difficult to determine authorship for works produced so long ago.
