Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, writing under the pseudonym Lewis Carroll, produced "Alice's Adventures Under Ground" between 1862-1864 as a gift for a coworker's daughter, named Alice Liddell. Dodgson was a mathematics tutor at Oxford when the dean of the college invited the would-be author to spend the holidays with his children.
